What is Turmeric (Curcuma Longa |Curcumin)

Turmeric (tɜːrmərɪk) is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant also known as Curcuma Longa of the Ginger Family, Zingiberaceae. The Latin name of turmeric is Curcuma Longa, which comes from Arabic name for the plant Kurkum.  In sanskrit it is called Haridra(The yellow one), Gauri (The one whose face is light and shining), Kanchani (Golden Goddess), Aushadhi (Herb).   It is also called Jiang Huang in Chinese and Haldi in Hindi.

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa |Curcumin)is called “Indian Saffron” because of its deep yellow saffron like color.  Turmeric has been used since ancient times as a condiment, health remedy and dye to color fabrics. Turmeric occupies important place in Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia which dates back to 5000 years.  

Turmeric is coded as food additive E100 in canned beverages, baked products, dairy, ice cream, yogurts, yellow cakes, biscuits, popcorn, sweets, cake icing, cereal, sauces, gelatins, and also direct compression tablets.  Turmeric is also used to color cheese, dry mixes, butter, dry mixes, salad dressing and margarine with annatto. The bright color of Turmeric was also used for dyeing silk and wool robes of Buddhist monks traditionally.

The preservation property of Turmeric (Curcuma Longa |Curcumin) was known to people of India since ancient times and therefore it was used in curries and other food to improve storage conditions, palatability and preservation.
